Sarah Gettys is a feminist singer-songwriter deeply influenced by the jazz tradition. She started out life as a classical pianist since the age of four and earned her B.A. in Music with a focus on classical piano from U.C. Santa Cruz. She went on to study jazz singing and harmony at the School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa. After returning to the Bay Area in 2014, she started teaching voice and piano lessons at her private studio, and writing music for her current project. Her mentors include Laurie Antonioli, Theo Bleckmann, Dar Williams, Erin Fishler-Branam, Jason Smith, Lucas Mattson, Nicholas Roth, Dena DeRose, Murray Low, and Peter Barshay.
Her music brings together melodies informed by decades of classical piano study, vocal tone and harmony drawing from her experience as a jazz singer, with the simplicity and direct storytelling qualities of folk music, summarized by Theo Bleckmann as “sophisticated folk with a hook.”
